How it all started
Founded in 2001 by Randy D. Podolsky, a past Commodore, Ninth District Western Region of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, WWSA is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to providing crucial funding and physical assets to the Auxiliary so it can promote its missions and programs, as authorized by the Coast Guard,
Our story
Lake Michigan’s vast expanse, stretching 307 miles in length and 118 miles in width, is a recreational haven for millions. The great lakes region hosts 4.3 million registered boats, making water activities a significant part of our culture. However, this picturesque landscape harbors unforeseen dangers, as unpredictable weather conditions can turn a leisurely day on the water into a perilous situation. Imagine the urgency of needing assistance during an unexpected storm, or the vulnerability of a child unfamiliar with water safety. WWSA is dedicated to transforming these risks into opportunities for education, preparedness, and responsible boating practices. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary (Auxiliary) is the country’s premier all-volunteer, uniformed branch of the US Coast Guard. WWSA provides important funding to the local Auxiliary unit(s) which are in desperate need of financial and resource support.
Our approach and impact inspires change
Traditionally, WWSA has relied on an annual fundraising event to sustain its operations. However, this source alone is insufficient to adequately support the Auxiliary and its dedicated volunteers. Therefore, we are actively seeking additional funding to enhance our facilities and upgrade our equipment. This crucial initiative aims to ensure that our resources are at all times “mission-ready” and equipped with cutting-edge technology and the latest safety equipment.
Our work profoundly impacts the community by:
- Enhancing safety for all boating enthusiasts
- Public education to ensure enjoying the water responsibly
- Supporting vessel inspections and safety checks for recreational boaters
- Educating individuals of all ages through various classes
- Supporting an elite team of volunteers ready for search and rescue and disaster preparedness

WWSA and its supporting organizations are committed to educating individuals of all ages on water safety, environmental stewardship, and recreational boating safety.
